Grand South Morocco Tourist Circuit (Ouarzazate)
Ouarzazate lies south of the High Atlas mountain range — gateway to the south-eastern Moroccan Sahara. Its vast Taourirt Kasbah, built in the 18th century from pisé (sun-dried earth and straw), housed a fortified palace (the medieval equivalent of a castle) where the local pasha, a senior royal dignitary, resided. The red-earth fortified ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou is UNESCO World Heritage — a striking example of pre-Saharan southern Moroccan architecture.
